Pros
Great for getting vinyl and tape media into the computer. None of them exist in cd format or mp3 so it’s nice to have it on the go. Plan is to eventually use a-to-d to digitize lps.
This thing does what it's supposed to by complying with the riaa standard fix. The gain control is a * feature as some of my 12 records are 45rpm and output louder than 33rpm, so setting the gain to -2 prevents any clipping. Reassemble the screw, and ... Read More
Headphone monitoring with its own separate volume control. Replaces using vban/voicemeeter audio rerouting over ip from my main gaming pc to my streaming pc. And lastly, to top it all off, this thing also has headphone monitoring.
Cons
Don't want to dedicate a computer just to listen to records, so back it goes. I'm not even an audiophile, but i found this pretty unlistenable.

This unit is not compatible with a low-output moving coil cartridge. There is no port on my pc labelled appropriate input.

By far the best most versatile preamp for the money
I got this as a cheap temp amp
For the cost is offers so much flexibility beyond just being a preamp for your turntable

Competitiveness
The sound coming from my speakers with the project unit was substantially better than the art phono plus even on one of its good days
Then i ordered an ac power supply for this unit and the hum went away when on ac power and phono out
I don’t use the phono stage built in because it does not compare with my phono stage imo
But not fair to compare to my phono stage with is over 1200bucks

Note the preamp does not require an external 9vdc power supply

In fact i measured more extraneous noise in the usb output when using a regulated linear 9vdc power supply than when powering it from usb

Tried changing out cords and tightening the ground wire connections but no luck until i set the unit on my antistatic mat

The griffin imic that ive been using to convert the analog signal from the bang olufsen 1700 ive had since the 80s for capture with audacity on a mac became the weak link when i replaced the original cartridge in the tt with a new one from soundsmith

Im not using the preamp functionality of the unit because thats well taken care of by a carver c2 preamp that ive had just about as long

The preamp is also fed from a cassette unit so i can digitize both old records and tapes the latter of which i dedolby after capture with the ddi codec application
