After doing some research, the clear choice was to buy a separate modem and router as opposed to buying or renting a gateway.

Centurylink and comcast are the two main providers where i live (boulder, co), and unfortunately purchasing a modem for comcast isn't compatible with centurylink so if i switch isps i'll have to buy a new modem.

But routers are generally compatible with most modems, assuming i keep it within the tech limits of the modem/service and router capability, so purchasing a router has a longer effective life span than a modem if i switch isps whether its do to moving or jumping for a prom, which is possible as i have no loyalty to utility companies.

Setting up the router and modem is a cinch, and you can really save a bundle and likely have a better configured network at home.

I don't normally write reviews, but i accidentally dumped an entire glass of water on this modem (quite literally was dumping water out of this thing) and wasn't expecting it to work at all after.

Got a bargain on a refurbished unit.

But had to call cox to add the modem (i remember the last unit could activate by itself via wizard), no biggies.
