In woodards reckoning virginia is about evenly divided between its tidewater and appalachian components and they hate each other very much the tidewater component is pseudoaristocratic and more genteel while the appalachian western half of the state is more roughhouse scotsirish and lends itself to a variety of derogatory nicknames of which redneck is one of the milder

After reading this you will no longer wonder why the south is so authoritarian and racist why washington and jefferson and madison were tidewater aristocracy and natural candidates for leadership why the far west is so antigovernment but so very willing to accept its financial help why the appalachian region is poor but independent and antiauthoritarian and why new york is the diversity and finance capital of the nation
