    It's wonderful being able to get a serial console on my rpi's, since i generally use them without a keyboard and mouse and either headless or a very small (7) display that is useless for fixing wifi settings if you got them wrong on disk.

    No need to hook up the red lead, which supplies 5v+ from the usb port, as the router doesn't need it and it could potentially damage the device.

    Basically after imaging the memory card with raspbian, you can change the configuration file before putting it in your rpi to use the serial connection.

    No monitor needed to do further work on rpi, all can be done through the cli via putty.
