The instructions fail to point out that there is a small switch on one end with three positions:- inner, always on; middle, always off; outer sensor active.

After a few days i discovered that they automatically switch off after two minutes - another point missing from the specs - they are reactivated by closing the door and re-opening (or using your hand).
