Of the rest of the cast i particularly felt for edyth swanneck – not least because harold never honoured her with christian marriage preferring the old pagan handfast method not recognised in english law

I was also fascinated by harold’s elder brother sweyn whose ‘brutish’ behaviour left a lot to be desired and tostig’s actions especially his joining forces with harald sigurdsson played a big part in harold’s defeat at hastings

All in all this is a good retelling of a wellknown story

There is a lot of going back in time in the novel and then moving forward which is somewhat of a challenge for the reader to keep track of what is happening
