The idea is to get the whole assembly of straps underneath the mattress. When all of the straps are attached just start tightening the adjustments until there's enough tension to keep the sheet in place. You can also tighten them up.

The design is also a huge pain for installation as i have a heavy 13 inch helix mattress. Got a nice bruise on my pinky from installing one of these. You're better off getting the $3 set at w@lm@rt which also breaks.
