My event was expected to last 4 hours, but ended in 3. I had 42 guests. In my communications with the Sales Manager, I was quoted $200 for an open bar. I explained to the Sales Manager beforehand that half of my guests were non-alcoholic drinkers including my 3 underage children. During the event, several guests noticed that the bartender was not measuring the amount of alcohol being poured, nor did she tally drink consumption. Also, several guests witnessed the bartender having a drink on the job for which I later assumed was at my expense. \n\nThe very next day after the event, I checked my online bank account and noticed that Spartanburg Marriott charged me an additional $764 than what was quoted. I immediately contacted the Sales Manager to request a copy of an itemized receipt of charges. Upon my request, and two days later – I received the receipt. The additional fees were due to alcohol consumption. When I questioned the Sales Manager, and thus disputed the chargers – I was told, the fees were tallied by the bartender, and thus the alcohol consumption is correct. The Spartanburg Marriott refused to listen to my concerns about the discrepancies found with the bartender nor were they willing to agree to a compromise in hopes of satisfying their customer. \n\nAt my persistent request, I finally received a phone call from the hotel’s General Manager to discuss the issue. He admitted that the Bartender made an error in tallying the alcohol consumption; and at the close of our call, he guaranteed a credit equivalent to half the overage fees. \n\nIt was nearly 3 weeks after my initial call with the General Manager, and another request regarding the whereabouts of a refund before I finally received a partial credit for the overage fees. The Spartanburg Marriott Hotel appears to be in the business of unethical, and bait-and-switch practices. I am confident that my 20 guests did not consume 114 alcoholic drinks in 3 hours. Drink price ranged from $4 - $7 per drink. I was not given a fair opportunity to dispute the erroneous fees because the Spartanburg Marriott failed to disclose the final amount at the close of my event. Instead, they (Spartanburg Marriott) quoted me one amount for an open bar, charged me another amount which was $764 higher than the original quote, and then refused to listen to my concerns. I am completely exhausted from my experience with the Marriott hotel. What should have been a memorable occasion, turned into a disastrous planning experience which is now unforgettable. \n\nIn closing, I encourage anyone who is considering an event at the Marriott hotel to PLEASE reconsider... Go elsewhere! Yes, their venue is beautiful but the hassle you will endure post-event is not worth the allure. Save yourself a headache. There are other great venues to choose from who will honor their quote plus ensure you a fantastic event filled with great memories. I always go back to see if the quality of service, food, and amenities has changed. It has not. This Marriott I call my Surprise Marriott because I just don’t expect this level of service and hotel amenities, space, food, etc at this place. It just works, and is worth it. I shall keep going here when in the area. By the way, I don’t ever think of eating out. My wife and I always eat at this Marriott. If you get Christin and Wendy as servers, say high. Kennedy and Wanda on the front desk are a dynamic duo. We had had our reservation for months. \n\n It appeared that on this evening the entire operation was being run by four 19-year-olds. One person at the desk , one person running a large bar solo and a couple of people taking orders in multiple restaurants. Dishes etc piling up ; they were clearly under staffed . All we’re doing their best but come on! This morning , no better ;15 people in line at Starbucks - one poor employee trying to care of them all. \n\n The facility is nice -the rooms are adequate the pool and fitness center areas are well-equipped. The outside terrace area is quite nice .
