If we could, we would give it more than 5 stars. \nOur room was absolutely lovely, very cosy and nicely decorated. \nThe staff were very friendly and helpful, they have rules, but they are fair and really not that hard to follow!\nAlso, I would like to thank our hosts for taking such good care of us. I'm vegan and I didn't say anything the first day we were there, so breakfast was just normal, with cheese and ham and jams, bread, etc. But at the end, I apologised and explained why I left so much food on the plate because I didn't want them to think I was rude. Next day to my surprise they gave me almond milk, granola with nuts and blueberries and of course the amazing bread and jams... They need to control all guest interactions and behavior. The hotel appearance is nice and clean, but the customer experience suffers greatly. They are control freaks, leading to an awful pattern of behavior among the managers that manifests itself in dishonesty. We booked a double room successfully on Expedia last evening and received an email confirmation of such for a stay in August 2018. Early this morning Expedia sent us a cancellation notice, suggesting a credit card rejection by the hotel. I called the Hotel Phoenix directly In Reykjavik and spoke to the day manager. He was efficiently polite, but abrupt. I gave him my personal information and he insisted that my Amex card was invalid. I assured him it is in good standing and offered to book directly with him. I told him the nightly rate I paid online (see below). He said I must work through Expedia or another online booking aggregator, like TripAdvisor. He was just \"reception\" and had no ability to access their reservation system (this, in a very small hotel of 9 rooms). I then called Expedia. Expedia said the Hotel Phoenix rejected my card. Expedia offered to call the Hotel while I was on hold and they spoke with the manager. The hotel manager reiterated my card was rejected without providing a specific reason to Expedia. I then conferenced Expedia and Amex to discuss. Amex insisted my card was in good standing. The Expedia rep acknowledged this. Amex said there was NO ATTEMPT to process my card by the hotel, after Expedia confirmed my reservation and accepted my AMEX during the online booking process. Now the interesting part: The double room I booked last evening was listed on Expedia and TripAdvisor at $218.00 per night $US. The Expedia rep said she would re-book the same room over the phone with me. When she gave me the price of the room, the Hotel had just raised the minimum rate to $330.00. Since bookings are now increasing for this summer in Reykjavik, a very busy time of year, the hotel decided it did not have to honor its published rate nor its relationship with Expedia to provide that published rate ($218.00) to guests (me) wanting to and expecting pay that agreed upon rate. Read Delegator's review written just one month ago, in February 2018. He provides excellent detail on their method. Bait and switch pure and simple. In reality, these guys did me a big favor. Life is short. Comfort, cleanliness and charm rate very highly. Our room was superb with quality linen and spotlessly clean. Even a turndown service and chocolates. Breakfasts were just as we like, with plentiful coffee, not to mention the delicious skyrr. The guys who run the hotel were very helpful and pleasant. A great hotel, just far enough from the centre to be peaceful.
