I graduated Irvington a few years ago and I must say that it was one heck of a roller coaster. The teachers I had were amazing, especially Ms. Faitel. I hope she is still teaching since she is, by far, the best teacher I have ever had in high school. Not to say that the other teachers I had were not good, they were. I have never had a "bad" teacher. However, the reason I only rate this school three stars is because of my experience with the attendance staff. I, along with my sibling, have CONSTANTLY faced issues when we had to go to the attendance office. I understand that it is the attendance clerk's job to ensure that students go to school and do not skip, but the way that Ms. Flores, who is an attendance clerk, handles it is seriously out of line. It is not just myself, but many of my other friends who also had attended Irvington knew the fear of seeing Ms. Flores. There were a few times when I came into school a few minutes late. I would then reluctantly walk into the attendance office to see Ms. Flores. knowing that I would get yelled at. Firstly, If you want to teach a student, you should not go about doing so by yelling at them because they were late. I specifically remember one time during my QUEST project that I came back to school 10 minutes late due to traffic, and Ms. Flores yelled at me stating that "You are a senior, you should know by now that if you do not come back at this specific time, you will get written up. " I was then considered truant for the day because I was 10 minutes late. I even told her I could get my parents to come in to talk to her and tell her that it was due to traffic that I was 10 minutes late. Yet, she stated "what is the use of bringing your parents in? Either way, you would still be considered truant. " Maybe it was my fault for not leaving early enough, but either way, the way Ms. Flores handled the situation was completely out of line. Her words will forever scar my memories of Irvington. What makes things worse is that the whole attendance office was packed with students. Was it really necessary for her to condescendingly yell at me in front of everyone? Does yelling at students make you feel powerful, Ms. Flores? Does it? There were also a few times that I came in late due to headache or fatigue and I had my doctor write notes for me. I CLEARLY remember, how Ms. Flores dealt with my situation. She stated that "just because this is a doctor's note doesn't mean that you can constantly bring in doctor's notes as an excuse for being late". Are you serious. are you really serious? I can't believe she would even have the nerve to say something like this. It was after these cases, that I had completely lost respect for this lady. It is not just me, but it was also my sibling who had to deal with Ms. Flores' derogatory attitude. I understand that it is the attendance clerk's jobs to ensure that students do not skip school, and that is fine. but Ms. Flores needs to find a new way of handling this, otherwise she shouldn't be an attendance clerk. No student should ever have to deal with the condescending attitude of anyone. let alone an attendance clerk who has no respect for students. Read Less
