Several years ago, I surprised my girlfriend (now my wife) on her birthday with a skydiving experience through Bay Area Skydiving.  We were living in Concord at the time, so the drive to Byron was a cool 45 minutes through Marsh Creek Road (the scenic route).  I had made a reservation several weeks ahead and gotten the second time slot on a Saturday morning.  We arrived in plenty of time before our appointment and were directed to fill out the obligatory waivers and watch a safety video.  After the red tape, we were given a tutorial on how to put on the suit and the rundown on how the morning would go.Since we got here so early, we were able to watch the previous group jump.  One of the patrons had bought jumps for himself and his father for his dad's 70th birthday!  The rest of the family was on the ground with us watching, which was very exciting for them!  That also gave us some reassurance: if this 70 year old guy could jump for the first time, it would be easy for us whipper-snappers!After this group landed, it was our turn.  We suited up and met our instructors.  Since this was the first jump for both of us, we were going tandem.  Both of our instructors were ex-military and put us at ease right away.  Before we knew it, we were on the plane and started to ascend!  The plane was barebones; we sat on the floor while the plane climbed to the jumping height.  Once we reached 13,000 feet, the door was opened, I leaned forward, and jumped out of the plane.The freefall only lasted 30-45 seconds, but the experience has been burnt into my mind (even after all these years).  The biggest sensation was the rush of air as we descended; I couldn't hear anything else, not even my screams of delight as we fell towards the earth.  Only after we pulled the cord and released the chute could I hear myself think.  The juxtaposition between the chaos of the freefall and the serenity of the slow descent with the chute was mind blowing.  The calm peace of the Delta farmlands and the clear autumn sky was breathtaking, putting me in a meditative state.  I also had a delightful conversation with my instructor, who answered all my questions about his current and past professions.  We landed on the ground without a care, and my wife and her instructor were less than a minute behind us.  After disconnecting from our instructors, we shared and laughed about our experience.  This jump was over 10 years ago, and I know that the ownership has changed.  But I would not hesitate to recommend Bay Area Skydiving to anyone who is even thinking about jumping.  Don't think... just do it!  Read Less
