Pros
The lego stem kit is a great way to teach your kid about science and technology. It's a great learning tool for older kids as well as a fun toy for younger ones. It costs around the same as other lego sets, but is more expensive.
The instruction guide is perfect for a visual builder. Getting the base without any build on top of it is super simple and straightforward. The instructions are a little convoluted.
The thames sets have bigger pieces and are easier for little hands to assemble compared to knex. The default design is very heavy and top heavy. Even i was stumped at some aspects.
The thames & kosmos robotics workshop is light years removed from the days of erector sets and raw motorized devices. This is the hour of code of the robot world. The idea of this robot set is cool.
The hoverbot balance robot is a very interesting one to play with, if you're adventurous to tinker with the app to set all of the balance parameters. You are required to download an app to calibrate and control the hoverbots motor assembly.
Cons
The parts are difficult to detach from one another. The app crashes half the time. It's very easy to put together, but the bluetooth didn't connect.

I had some trouble with the bluetooth disconnecting only when the batteries in the robot were low

My only reservation is the price i got it on sale and im sure im not the first one to broach this subject

I would say he can get about as fast as your basic rc racecar
Packaging/appearance
And a bit of a warning the packaging might attract a wider crowd
I think a much larger run area would be helpful at first i tried but it freaked out the cats
