The catch is that this is only needed if you want to use the internal synology apps to view these photos and videos and there are better ones out there to do that anyway so the answer is not to use these apps and not to put files in those directories

Yes there is a photo uploader app you can use to do the conversion on a remote computer and upload them that way but even that chokes on large directories of files and frankly isnt worth the effort to me either
