Move the safety from off to on which is backwards in the instruction manual and then turn the knob until you can hear the fuel firmly press the igniter button

Make sure you are not pointing it anything and arent too close to flammable objects because this thing puts out a longer flame than you might expect

It does not come with a canister of butane but you can purchase that at any store for a couple of dollars

Then you turn the knob on the back just enough to hear the gas escaping and while holding the torch facing away from you or anything else press the ignition trigger

Once your flame is lit you turn the gas knob to adjust the flame

You do not need to hold the trigger while using that is only to light the torch

When you are done just turn off the gas by turning the knob all the way off
