The book goes back and forth between what happened in the soviet union and eichars own experiences in the russian federal republic while he researched the events of 1959

Echar admits that he was never very interested in russian history before he wrote this book so he can be forgiven for talking about the role of police in 1959 the militia was responsible for civil policing in the ussr and making it sound like the gulags were russian phenomena instead of a byproduct of the communist state begun by lenin but his logical dismissal of many of the wild theories surrounding the dyatlov pass and his own sciencebased theory of what happens more than makes up for any cultural differences
