The included hdmi to minidp was not going to cut it

I used minidp to dp minidp to hdmi thunderbolt to dvi with a dp adapter thunderbolt to dvi with a hdmi adapter and minidp to dvi with an hdmi adapter and none would work without the dreaded eggshaped distortion in lowres mode

Although the minidp and thunderbolt have the same form factor and are interchangeable in most respects the older macbooks like mine could not get the monitor to display in full 2560 x1080 no matter what i tried even using displayresolution mod apps from the apple app store

Either it works or it doesnt and the rest is up to your tv monitor
