Pros & Cons
Pros
Sedgewick presents the algorithms in a very clear, very understandable way. The code examples are impeccable, regardless of your language of choice. If you are familiar with computer science then this is generally useful!
Red-black trees is outstanding. Because a book material this heavy requires the reader to sink in instead of rushing it. Love prof sedgewicks book.
The author has talent of simplifying complex concepts as nobody else does. This book clears it all up and if you truly study this book your feedback loop will increase. The visuals that sedgewick has created are very helpful. The diagrams are great.
The previous one that i seriously read (but fail to finish) is introduction to algorithms, clr. This book is a very clearly written, and cogent treatment of basic algorithms.
The book has an excellent helper website that allows you to download most of the example code from the book and a few java helper classes. The java snippets are very easy to read, i’m a c++ guy and have zero issues translating. The book explains clear... Read More
Cons
Most of all of what is written in this book is copied and pasted from the former book mentioned. There's plenty of good material, but the book is needlessly complex. The sentences get so twisted that even the authors start to lose track of them.
Low image resolution for ebook pics/figs is terrible, fuzzy, illegible. I prefer reading on my kindle paperwhite but this book does not display well.
The page focuses on java methods. Writing instance methods in java is just like writing static methods. The very next sentence goes on to accidentally explain that *every* java method must have a return statement.
Highlights
Quality
Short and simple this book walks you through what data structures are their purpose and use
There is no shortage of material a very good balance of breath and depth
Believe it or not serious coder set up their debug procedure two minutes earlier before they start to code anything
To build some advanced algorithmic software this is not your reference it is too basic
Price
23 trees chapter and the regular expressions chapter are worth the price of the whole book
Shipping
This purchase was as expected although did arrive a few days earlier than originally quoted
Shipping was fast received 2 days after i made the order and i took a look through the topics covered in this book
Competitiveness
I find this book much better than kormen
This is a more approachable alternative to the clrs algorithms book
Compared to clrs sedgewicks approach is more accessible and takes more care about how an algorithm is actually implemented
Instead of simply writing algorithms as pseudocode it also dives into the nittygritty of implementation in java of each algorit... Read More
